Bayern Munich to win at Benfica @ 1/2
Bayern powered to five wins during last year’s group stage, only losing out to PSG in France, and went on to beat Besiktas and Sevilla in the knockout rounds until being edged out by Real Madrid for the second straight season. New head coach Niko Kovac looks determined to keep up the good work judged on a trio of clinical Bundesliga triumphs this term, with three goals scored on each occasion.
Shakhtar Donetsk to beat Hoffenheim @ Evens
Hoffenheim can be forgiven for starting their Bundesliga campaign with a 3-1 loss at Bayern Munich but Saturday’s 2-1 defeat at Fortuna Dusseldorf was far more worrying and they look a team to take on in our European football tips. Shakhtar secured three home wins in a tough pool last term, seeing off Manchester City, Napoli and Feyenoord and beat Roma here before only bowing out on the away goals rule.
Juventus to win at Valencia @ 83/100
Cristiano Ronaldo made a slow start to his Juventus career but can be relied upon to come alive for the Champions League and bagged a timely brace in Sunday’s fourth straight Serie A success versus Sassuolo. The Old Lady have won their last three European away games against Olympiakos, Tottenham and Real Madrid and can prove a cut above a Valencia side which has gone four La Liga fixtures without a win.
Real Madrid to beat Roma @ 9/25
The Whites begin their quest to lift this trophy for the fourth straight season without Ronaldo but it is worth remembering that none of the seven goals scored in last term’s semi-final games versus Bayern or the decider against Liverpool came from their former talisman. Real have started well in La Liga, whereas Roma have struggled a touch in Serie A and have a moderate record on the road in this competition.
Ajax to beat AEK Athens @ 2/5
The Dutch giants were impressive at Amsterdam ArenA during three qualifying rounds, beating Sturm Graz 2-0, Standard Liege 3-0 and Dynamo Kiev 3-1. The goals have also been flowing in Eredivisie games, with Ajax netting 13 times in four straight domestic victories. Klaas-Jan Huntelaar can still get the job done, while Dusan Tadic has shone since joining from Southampton, so this is an easy pick for our European football tips.
